I went out for Phenology on February 8, 2012. I observed two ducks in my site. They were eating out of the bottom of the creek. I believe they were mallards. It was sunny and slightly windy that day. The air temp. was -4/3 degrees C brrrr! The water temp. was 3 degrees C. There was half an inch of snow on the ground as well. There was also plastic in my site in the water. People should pick up after themselves to help keep the environment clean.

Early February Phenology...

Thanks, Rachel. What characteristics did the ducks have that led you to conclude they were Mallards? From your photo I can see there were a lot of tracks in the snow... was it a fresh snow? When had it fallen? What were the tracks? What additional behaviors did you observe from the Mallards? I would really like your posts to share more detail regarding the intricacies of your site and your observations.
